Hello Lakeshore Families,

We have an exciting event on Monday this week with the solar eclipse. There are safety measures in place, so please read this and other items in this week’s update.

Solar Eclipse Safety – Monday, April 8

The peak solar eclipse activity in Calgary will take place from 11:50 AM – 1:50 PM. As you may know, staring at the eclipse is extremely dangerous and can cause significant damage to eyes and eyesight. In an effort to ensure the safety of our students, we will be keeping all students inside during the lunch period. Please send a lunch with your child tomorrow as students will not be permitted to leave. If you would like to excuse your child from school for the lunch period, please email your child’s homeroom teacher prior to 11:00 AM tomorrow for permission. Please note, this is the only form of consent we will accept. Pizza-on-Demand will be available in the Snack Shack as will other regular items for sale. The CBE messaged all families about safety precautions last week (message HERE). Classes may monitor the eclipse through safe, live stream events.

Apparel Store Open

The spring apparel store remains open. Visit the site HERE to order your Lakeshore swag.

School Planning Survey Results

Thank you to those of you who participated in the School Planning Survey. The results are available HERE, but will also be discussed at the April School Council meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 6:00 PM at the school. Results will be considered in planning decisions for the 2024-2025 school year.

Bears Athletics

Volleyball Celebrations

All junior and senior volleyball teams have planned their parties for this upcoming week. Please email your players coach if you are not sure of the date.

Badminton Tryouts

We saw an excellent turn out at each grade group. Tryouts continue for most teams this week. The schedule will stay the same throughout the season.

Touch Football Teams

Lakeshore is very excited to announce we will be participating in a middle school pilot of touch football. We have committed to a junior and senior team. The teams will be co-ed and consist of students in grade 7-9. There will be an end-of-season tournament at Shouldice versus other pilot schools. Tryouts will likely run the week of April 22. Please watch the Parent Update and the Lakeshore Athletics Instagram account for further information.

PE and Wellness News

Grade 6 Sexual health exemption forms were sent out by School Messenger (email) on Saturday. These forms are only required to be returned to excuse a student from this unit. Deadline to return forms is April 17. Please email Mrs. Clark, agclark@cbe.ab.ca, with any questions.

Spring Photo Day – Thursday, April 18

Spring photos will take place next week (another reminder will be sent in next weekend’s update).

CBE Well-Being Family and Caregiver Series

The next session in the CBE series will be Healthy Sexual Development. This will be an online session on April 11th starting at 6:30 PM. Learn how, when and why to talk to your children about sexuality and how to support healthy values development in children. This session will also explore what sex education looks like at school and how you can support it. Use the Meeting Link to join the session.

Hot Lunch Options

Offerings for the week of April 15 – 18 include Edo, Subway, Donair Grill and Boardwalk Burgers. Visit https://healthyhunger.ca to place your orders. Pizza Wednesdays continue with slices available for $5 at the Snack Shack.

Spring Cleaning? Use the Textile Bins at Lakeshore!

Lakeshore families and community members are encouraged to drop unwanted textiles – old clothing, shoes, blankets, etc. in the blue bins in the school parking lot. The items are upcycled and the money earned through your donations benefits the School Council.

Thank you for all that you do in support of our students, staff and school. Have an awesome week, and safe travels to our Grade 9 students visiting Ottawa this week.

Kind Regards,

Ian Fero,
Principal
