Hello Lakeshore Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are entering our final week of January. Thankfully, the warm weather is bringing some good vibes to the dead of winter. Here are your updates for the week ahead:

Thank You!
A big thanks to all families who took the time to visit with us last Thursday for our Complementary Course Showcase, Band Concert and Bear Fair. Our students and staff felt the evening was a huge success. We are so proud of our students and programs and were happy to share it with you. Some highlights from the evening are posted to our school Instagram page.

Reports Cards Available Monday
Semester one report cards will be available on Monday, January 27. Instructions on how to access you child’s report card are available HERE. New to this semester will be a parent signature / comment slip which will be returned to the school. Please anticipate this coming home with your child on Monday.

Semester Two Begins Tuesday
Our schedule will flip to semester two on Tuesday meaning our grade 7-9 students will be switching to new complementary courses. Students in grade 6 will also begin a new complementary course rotation. We do not have the ability to accommodate complementary course changes for students. Student schedules are available via their MyCBE account, but students are also welcome to come to the office to review their schedules if needed.

Family Mental Health Evening – Wednesday, February 19
Does your child struggle with anxiety and positive mental health? You are not alone. Our School Council is hosting a family evening on Wednesday, February 19 starting at 6:30 PM at the school. The evening will feature testimonials and tips from our very own Harper family – co-authors of Rise Up 20 Days To A Healthier Mindset For Teen And Tweens, and a keynote address from Connie Jakab. The event is FREE for all Lakeshore families, and interested community members are also welcome. Our previous council-hosted events have all been positively received, so we hope you may join us to explore this important topic. Please RSVP HERE so our council can prepare to host.

Cast and Crew Update for Lakeshore Show – The Little Mermaid
We will have a meeting for the Cast, Stagehands, and Stage Managers on Tuesday, January 28th, during lunch (12:20 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.) in the Drama Room. Students should bring their lunch with them. During this meeting, we will distribute scripts, music, and the rehearsal schedule. Attendance is mandatory, so please have your child see Ms. Taylor, Mrs. Cooper, or Mrs. Beazer know if they are unable to attend for any reason. We will hold a separate meeting for crew members in the coming weeks. The date, time, and location will be posted next week on the callboard, google classroom, and @lakeshoreshow Instagram.

Bears Athletics
Wrestling
The wrestling season wraps up this week with the Divisional meet at Genesis center on Wednesday Jan 30th. This is a full day field trip for the athletes. Transportation is provided to the meet and home; however, students will not arrive back at the school until 4:00 and will need to be picked up. Good Luck to all our Wrestlers.

Volleyball
Information packages were sent home with all teams this week and fees have been added to PowerSchool. The senior teams both competed in their first tournament of the season at JCS on Friday with the Senior Girls bringing home the title. The Senior Boys played in a series of close, hard-fought matches missing the finals by one point! Congratulations to both teams.

Grade 6 volleyball club started this week with 19 students at the first practice. There is still room for a couple more participants if any more grade 6 students are interested. The club practices every Wednesday morning at 7:15am and is open to individuals of all skills levels.

Prospect Volleyball also had a great start. The program has a capacity for 28 participants and is already full. We look forward to a great season of development, culminating in a large tournament in March. Please remember this program only works if each player is committed to the regular practices.

Intramural volleyball – the PE team is trying something new with the volleyball intramurals, by organizing a volleyball tournament. Grade 8-9 students are welcome to register a team of 6-8 players. The teams can be mixed grade and mixed gender. Students have until Wednesday to enter a team by completing the form on the club bulletin board. This is an opportunity for any grade 8 or 9 student to play volleyball for fun. At Lakeshore we were so excited by the number of students at volleyball tryouts, we are inspired to offer as many opportunities for students be involved as possible.

Physical Education / Health
Sexual Education exemption forms were sent home this week in a school messenger. These forms only need to be returned is parents want to excuse their student from participating in the sexual education health unit. Parents can also get additional copies from the front office. The unit will start as soon as this Thursday, January 30 for some classes. For further information or questions, please email Mrs. Clark: agclark@cbe.ab.ca.

Request for Magazine Donations
Our Art and Fashion programs are looking for used magazines. If you have some school-appropriate magazines that we might be able to have, please send them in with your child and have them drop them in a bin outside the art room.

Beware of Storm Ponds
The recent warm weather has placed an extra emphasis on wetlands and storm ponds in the Auburn Bay and Mahogany communities. Please remind your children of the danger of these areas and see the City of Calgary information HERE. Sadly, there are many footprints on the ponds signaling there is a need for extra caution.

Hot Lunch Options
Options for the week of February 3 include Popeyes, Boardwalk, Spolumbos and Opa. Orders can be placed HERE. Our pizza-on-demand Wednesdays continue and remain very popular.

That’s all the news for now. Have a wonderful week.

Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
