Year-End Transitions
The warmer weather signals summer is approaching. For many, this is a positive signal, but for others it can be anxiety-inducing. Some students build strong bonds with their teachers and friends, and can also become deeply connected to the predictability of the schedule and routine. For these students, the anxiety they may be experiencing can show itself in different ways including changes in attitude and mood. If you feel your child is needing a little extra support through these final weeks of the school year, please connect with your child’s homeroom teacher and/or our Student Services team of Tracey Orr (taorr@cbe.ab.ca) or Melissa Hopkins (mnhopkins@cbe.ab.ca).
Air Quality and Outdoor Activity
Our staff have become very proficient at monitoring air quality and will err on the side of caution if the index poses a risk to our students. We have alternate indoor plans if required.
Mark Your Calendar – Last Day of School, June 27th
Please note that Thursday, June 27th will be the last day of school for students. This will he a half-day, similar to our Friday schedule. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM on this day for summer vacation.
Indigenous Community Connections
This past weekend brought some spectacular views of the aurora and the pictures coming in from Auburn Bay and Mahogany were spectacular. The aurora holds a rich tradition for our Indigenous community. “The overall teaching is just a respect for Mother Nature and the respect for the natural laws of this earth,” says Joely Bigeagle-Kequahtooway is Nakoda Cree Saulteaux. She also explains “Those are our ancestors in the sky and what that means literally and figuratively is we’re not alone on this planet,” she says. “The stories I was told were those Northern Lights represent this timeless energy, timeless energy period of when our ancestors lived on this land.” The aurora sightings are a great reminder to connect the wonders of nature to the Indigenous history and beliefs of Na’a – Mother Earth. Quotes picked up from the article HERE. Our Indigenous community is also preparing to lead Moose Hide campaign day on May 16th. The Moose Hide campaign is a day of ceremony where all Canadians are called to join together to take a stand against violence towards women and children and to take practical steps for our collective journey of reconciliation.
That’s all the updates for this week. Myself, Mr. deBoer and other members of our Lakeshore team are looking forward to visiting Bayside, Auburn Bay and Mahogany Schools over the next couple weeks to welcome our incoming Grade 6 students currently in Grade 5.
The next weekly update will come your way on Monday, May 20. Have a great week everyone!
Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
