Awareness of Increase in Use of Inappropriate Language

Over the course of the school year, teachers and school administration have been asked to support more and more cases of inappropriate language used by many students. Specifically, there are racially and sexually insensitive comments occurring both at school and online. Comments targeting others’ physical appearance are also notable. Group chats in apps like Snapchat seem to be the most common avenue. As per our Safe and Caring Schools mandate, language of this nature will never be normalized or acceptable, and reported incidences will be managed with admin-level consequences in correlation with the CBE Progressive Student Discipline Regulation. Based on our experiences this year, support has been offered to students in all grades, and all student profiles. Parents are encouraged to talk about appropriate use of language with their children and support ongoing classroom and school conversations about acting with kindness and with respect for equity, diversity and inclusion. Regular check-ins with your child about online / app activity are also recommended. Thank you for your partnership in this regard.

Hot Lunch Options

Healthy Hunger options for the week of May 13 include Mary Browns, Edo, Donair Grill and Taco Time. You can order at https://healthyhunger.ca. Pizza is available on-demand each Wednesdays for $5.

Indigenous Community Connections

All of our technology carts are named after famous fictional and local area bears – I am sure you can imagine the names of some or most of them. Recently, our new laptop cart came online with a special name, Kiaayo, which means “bear spirit” in Blackfoot. The Blackfoot have traditionally admired and protected the bear and the story of The Blackfoot and the Bear outlines the oral history of the relationship. We are happy to welcome “Kiaayo” into our rotation and every time we call its name, there will be cause to recall its Indigenous connection.

Thank you, Lakeshore families. Have a wonderful Sunday and a great start to your week!

Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
