Hello Lakeshore Families,
Hopefully everyone is enjoying a fun pre-fall weekend. We are looking forward to another great week at Lakeshore. Here are your updates for the week ahead:
Meet the Teacher Night - Thursday
Our Meet-the-Teacher Open House will take place in-person this Thursday, September 19th from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. Grade teams will send out specific event details before Thursday. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s homeroom teacher. The office will be open with our team attending to assist with forms, fees, bus information, or access to MyCBE. Please stop in for help or just to say hi.
School Council Meeting – Wednesday
All Lakeshore Parents are invited to attend our in-person School Council meeting on Wednesday at the school beginning at 6:00 PM. We hope to see many new parents in attendance.
Picture Day – October 9
A few students and parents have been asking about picture day. This is scheduled for October 9, so we are still a few weeks away. Reminders will be provided.
String Club – Starts Tuesday
Imagine being able to have your child receive top-notch music instruction for only the cost of a rental instrument. Mr. Auburn invites all returning and new musicians to join the String Club. Meetings are weekly on Tuesday from 3:15 to 4:15 PM. No experience is required. Violins, Violas, Cellos and Double Basses are all options to play. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Auburn at pmauburn@cbe.ab.ca.
Bears Athletics
Cross Country Running
The first run of the season was a huge success with a great presence from Lakeshore. The team will practice on Monday after school and the next meet is on Tuesday at North Glenmore Park. If any athletes did not get a team t-shirt you can pick one up in the PE office this week. The season finale is on Monday, September 23. Good luck to all our runners.
Soccer
The boys’ soccer team will have their first game of the season at home on Monday. All Lakeshore families are invited to come cheer on the team. They play on the Prince of Peace fields at 4:30pm. Both girls and boys athletes should have brought home an information package and permission forms which need to be returned to their coaches ASAP.
Basketball
The senior basketball teams completed tryouts and announced their rosters this week. Junior basketball team tryouts continue into next week, with Junior boys on Monday at 7:15 AM and Junior girls on Tuesday from 3:00- 4:30 PM. Athletes in grade 6/7 that are not chosen as Junior team members can join Lakeshore’s developmental basketball teams, referred to as our Prospect teams. The Prospect teams will practice twice a week with a large tournament at the end of the season in November. There will be a separate team for female and male students interested in developing their skills and gaining more experience. This team will consist of approx. 24 players per gender, with selection based on commitment to attend regular practices.
Team Fees
All our school teams do have a team fee to cover various costs. If your student(s) is participating on a school team, please make sure you sign onto PowerSchool to pay these team fees in a timely manner.
Basketball Spectator Policy
In preparation for the Middle School Athletics Basketball season, we would like to review the spectator policy which applies to all schools.
· Lakeshore students are invited to attend the first home game of the evening without parent supervision.
· Lakeshore students are not permitted to attend any games at other schools without parent supervision.
· If Lakeshore students are attending away games with parent supervision, the parent needs to be on-site for the whole time while their child is in attendance. Parents can only supervise the number of students they can transport in their vehicle.
· All spectators are expected to be respectful of all athletes, coaches and officials and cheer in a positive manner.
Local Businesses and Student Access
Each of the businesses in the area make up their own policies about student access during the lunch period and directly after school. For our part, we liaise regularly with the management teams and encourage our students to be kind and respectful while visiting and adhering to their establishment policies.
School Immunization Program
Alberta Health Services will visit schools to support ongoing immunization programs. Students in Grade 6 and Grade 9 are involved in the regular schedule with information available on the AHS website HERE. Our school does not manage these programs in any way other than hosting the AHS teams. If you have any questions as they relate to your child, please contact AHS via Health Link by calling 811.
Hot Lunch Options
Options for the week of September 23 include Opa, Boardwalk, Donair Grill and Swiss Chalet. Orders can be placed HERE. Pizza Wednesdays are back, and students can get pizza on-demand for $5 at the Snack Shack. No pre-order necessary.
Enhancing Literacy and Reading for Tweens and Teens
Do you have a reluctant reader at home? Are you unsure of what the latest and greatest books are for tweens and teens? Would you like to kick-start your child reading at home? We can help! Our Learning Commons is stocked with thousands of the best middle-school literature and our Library Assistant, Ms. Herman, is masterful at matching kids and high-engaging, just-right books. Encourage your child to visit Ms. Holly or send her an email at hoherman@cbe.ab.ca with a request to connect with your child.
Calgary Cavalry CBE Fundraiser
The Calgary Cavalry is offering a special offer for CBE families with a ticket, hot dog, and on-field meet-and-greet for their final home game of the season on October 12th. See HERE for more information.
Have a great week everyone!
Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
