Hello Lakeshore Families,
Today, September 22, marks the fall solstice and marks the change of season. We are looking forward to a fun-filled fall. Here are your updates for the week:
Thanks for Visiting with Us!
Thank you to all families who took the time to join us for Meet the Teacher night last Thursday. Our staff was very happy to greet everyone and were encouraged by your kindness and messages of positivity.
Orange Shirt Day – Thursday, September 26
All students are encouraged to wear orange on Thursday as we honour our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and support for Orange Shirt Day.
No Classes Friday, September 27 or Monday, September 30
Friday, September 27th is a CBE system-wide professional day and Monday, September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Classes will resume on Tuesday, October 1st.
Bears Athletics
Basketball
Next week our prospect basketball teams will start. This is a developmental program to provide students in grade 6/7 skills and game play experience to help foster a passion for the sport. No sign up or tryouts are necessary. Students just need to commit to making the regular practices twice a week until the interschool tournament on Friday Nov 1. There is a capacity of 24 kids per team. Boys Prospect Team Practices Wednesdays 3:00- 4:30 and Friday mornings beginning at 7:15 AM; Girls Prospect Teams Practice Tuesdays 3:00- 4:15 PM and Thursday mornings beginning at 7:30 AM. Questions? Please email Mrs. Clark at agclark@cbe.ab.ca.
Cross-Country Running
Our final cross-country meet is Monday, Sept. 23 at 5:00 at North Glenmore Park. This is the meet that counts for points towards winning school banners, so we would love to see all our athletes together that day and cheering each other on. Lakeshore is proud to have over 140 athletes on the cross-country team!
We have booked two buses to transport the team to the meet. It will depart the school around 3:30-3:40. Students who need a ride on the bus must sign up (most have done this already) and arrange for a ride home. They will be allowed to stay at the school until the buses arrive. They should bring a snack, a water bottle and remember to wear their Bears t-shirt.
There is a lot of parking at North Glenmore, but it fills up quickly. The start line is near lot E & F, and the finish line is near the parking lot by the tennis courts. The first race is at 5:00, but if athletes arrive around 4:15 they will have plenty of time to check in with the coaches and walk the course. Parents, please follow @lakeshoreathletics on Instagram for updates, course map and photos. If you have additional questions, please email kjbarva@cbe.ab.ca. GO BEARS!
Physical Education
As the weather starts to cool down, especially first thing in the morning, students need to remember they will continue to have outdoor PE classes unless it reaches -20 degrees. Gentle reminders that students need to dress for the weather will allow them to be more successful.
Hot Lunch Options
Selections for the week of October 1 -3 include Subway, Avi’s Shawarma and Canadian Brewhouse. Orders can be placed via Healthy Hunger. Pizza On-Demand Wednesdays continue with individual servings for $5 in the Snack Shack on a first-come-first-served basis.
The Perogy and Sausage Fundraiser is Back!
Back by popular demand, our School Council / Fundraising Association is happy to offer their perogy and sausage fundraiser. Fill your freezer for fall and winter with delicious, local products. The fundraiser will kick off on September 26th with information coming your way this week.
Lakeshore Terry Fox Run
The annual Terry Fox Run will take place on Friday, October 4th with a goal of surpassing our total of $5031 raised last year. Teachers will be offering a variety of student incentives to encourage donations. Keep Terry’s spirit alive and please donate online at our school’s Terry Fox Donation Website.
Have a great week, and we look forward to seeing all Lakeshore students wearing orange this Thursday.
Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
