Update to Parents - Week of January 15, 2024
Hello Lakeshore Families,
Welcome to your first update of 2024. We were certainly welcomed to back to school by this unique weather event. Thankfully, we managed to make it through the week, and hopefully you are all keeping well too. Here are your updates for the week:
No Classes on Monday
Monday, January 15 is a CBE System-Wide Professional Day. There is no school for students.
Thank You!
Thank you to all Lakeshore Families who demonstrated patience as traffic flow around the school picked up this past week. As more families were dropping off students, we tried our best to keep traffic moving, but your accommodation and support made it work. An additional thanks to all of you who worked through those teen arguments with your child to ensure they were actually wearing jackets and donning boots, mitts, scarves and toques.
Weather Adjustments
During extreme weather, we are always examining our procedures to keep our students safe. This past week, we were able to make some special adjustments to accommodate and support our students. We opened our doors early to welcome early arrivals and we deployed staff to all exit doors at lunch and at end-day to ensure all students leaving the building were bundled up and ready to go out into the cold. Our teachers also created safe lunch spaces in their classrooms. We also ensured all students leaving after athletics and clubs had a ride at the school before leaving the building.
School Council Meeting – Wednesday
Please feel free to join our School Council meeting on Wednesday starting at 6:00 PM. This is an in-person meeting at the school.
2024-2025 Instructional Calendar Now Available
For those who like to plan ahead, the 2024-2025 CBE calendar is now available.
2024-2025 Registration Information
Students currently at Lakeshore - All current Lakeshore students will be rolled forward for next year registration and our lottery status does not impact students already at our school. There is no further action required for our families.
Grade 5 students coming in (from main feeder schools) – Students attending grade 5 at our main feeder schools (Auburn Bay, Bayside and Mahogany) will be automatically entered into our lottery for grade 6. If you are a family of a grade 5 child looking to move to Lakeshore for grade 6, and you already have a child in grade 6-8, please respond to alfife@cbe.ab.ca by February 1 (if you have not done so already) with your child’s full name, sibling full name and grade and your address.
Current CBE Students not at our main grade 5 feeder schools – If you are attending another CBE school and looking to transfer to Lakeshore in the new year, at any grade, and reside within Auburn Bay or Mahogany, please complete a Transfer Form and have it signed by your current school administration. From there, you or the school can forward it to lakeshore@cbe.ab.ca, or you can bring it to the school in hard copy. All registrations are subject to the CBE lottery process. Full documentation (ex. proof of address) must be provided to complete registration.
New CBE Registrations – If you are new to the CBE, please complete the online registration. This is outlined HERE, based on our lottery status. The registration must be complete with all elements for it to be accepted.
Note, no registrations for students residing outside of Auburn Bay or Mahogany will be accepted.
If you require support, please email lakeshore@cbe.ab.ca and one of our office staff will get back to you.
Y Mind Program – Free Mental Health Program
Y Mind is a free, 7-week program for 13 to 18 year-olds based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The program is facilitated by trained mental-health professionals and outcomes have shown decreased anxiety and enhanced well-being and mindfulness skills. No diagnosis is required to participate. Intake meetings begin this week at the Seton YMCA with programs starting at the beginning of February. Please see program information, including FAQs and Registration info HERE.
Debit / Tap Now Available at our Snack Shack
We have caught up with the times and outfitted our Snack Shack with debit / tap. Students can pick up snacks and drinks daily with items ranging from $1 - $3. Our lead lunch supervisor is looking at bringing in on-demand lunch items for purchase as well.
Healthy Hunger Hot Lunch Options
Just a reminder that Healthy Hunger options are facilitated daily at Lakeshore to bring in hot lunch to our students. This service is even more advantageous during the cold weather. Please visit www.healthyhunger.ca to place your orders. Orders are finalized a week in advance.
Bears Athletics
Thanks to all athletes who came to try out for our Volleyball Teams. Turnout has been exceptional and selections have been tough. Selections for all teams will be complete this week with call back lists posted on the athletics bulletin board. Our Wrestling Team gets back into competition this week with a home meet scheduled on Thursday. Go Bears!
Clubs Schedule
I know that many of our parents would like an updated club schedule, but the dynamic nature of so many offerings on varied timelines can be difficult to relay effectively. Our students are made aware of all offerings through our weekly internal news broadcast and they can always check in with our clubs bulletin board at the school. If you have a child who is looking for something to get involved in, please have them talk to their teacher for guidance and support.
Intramurals Schedule
In addition to our lunchtime clubs, our PE team offers daily intramurals in the gym. Getting a little physical activity in is always a good idea during the cold winter months. The intramural schedule is: Monday – Grade 8/9, Tuesday – All Girls, Wednesday – Grade 7, Thursday – Grade 6.
New Year, New Instagram?
Instagram is one of our main communication tools during the busy weeks. It’s quick, easy and at your fingertips. Consider following our main Lakeshore account and our other accounts which can be found HERE. You don’t need to by on Instagram to follow the public accounts via your web browser.
Thanks again Lakeshore! Have a wonderful week, and we shall see our students on Tuesday.
Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
