Update to Parents - Week of November 15, 2023

Hello Lakeshore Families,

Hopefully everyone had a nice and relaxing Fall Break. We also hope that everyone took some time to honour and thank those in service, past and present, on Remembrance Day. Also, Happy Diwali to those who celebrated on November 12. Here are your updates for the week:

Picture Retakes on Thursday

Our photographer will be back at Lakeshore on Thursday morning for those who require retakes (or first takes if you missed the initial day). Please ensure you child knows whether or not you would like them to have a retake.

Social Media and Youth Mental Wellness – Parent Presentation

If you feel like you are the only one struggling with your teen regarding social media and screen time, you’re not. Please join other Lakeshore students and families on Wednesday, November 15th at 6:30 PM at the school for a presentation by Calgary Police Service Youthlink program. The event will cover topics like pros and cons of social media, social media trends, impacts on mental health and tips for parents. Please plan to join and RSVP to lakeshoreparents.comms@gmail.com to ensure we have space for all.

School Council Meeting – Wednesday @ 5PM

Our next School Council meeting is Wednesday at 5:00 PM at the school in advance of our Social Media and Youth Mental Wellness presentation. All Lakeshore families are invited.

Veteran’s Food Bank Drive Continues

We will be accepting non-perishable food items for the Veteran’s Food Bank until end-November. Please consider a donation. Bins are in The Den.

Conferences – November 23 and 24

Our next conference period will be on the evening of Thursday, November 23 and morning of Friday, November 24. All parents received information via email on Thursday, November 9. Bookings will be done via the MyCBE account.

Perogies Fundraiser

The Prairie Gourmet perogy and sausage fundraiser continues. Top sellers will receive a nice prize from our School Council / Fundraising Association. Visit the site HERE (password = lakeshorebears) to set yourself up for an order. Paper copy orders should be turned in to the school ASAP. If you don’t like fundraisers, but would like to donate to school fundraising, please email lakeshoreparents.comms@gmail.com for more information.

Lost Lakeshore Apparel?

If you child has lost their Lakeshore apparel, we store those items in the office so please have them come and ask. The reason for this is we find these branded items often leave the lost-not-found with someone other than the original owner.

Athletics Updates

Soccer Teams

The soccer season is now over. Team wrap up party will be next week on Thursday after school for boys and girls. There will be pizza and games. Please ensure your fees are paid (they are on the parent portal through your MyCBE account under “fees and registration”) as well as please ensure your child’s jersey has been returned. On behalf of all of the coaches, thank you for a wonderful season of soccer. Both teams did tremendously well and we are so proud of their accomplishments.

Basketball

All of our basketball teams are heading into semi-finals and then finals in the next week. We wish them luck as they finish their seasons. Our prospects will be competing in a tournament at JCS on November 17th and we wish them luck as well. Go Bears!!

Upcoming Hot Lunches

Healthy Hunger offerings for the week of November 20 include: Stuffies, Edo, Subway and Papa John’s Pizza.

Indigenous Community Connections

On Thursday, November 9, the entire Lakeshore staff participated in Maatoomsii'Pookaiks (Blackfoot for “Children First”), a PD session coordinated by our CBE Indigenous Education team. The offerings focused on The Heart domain and we had rich discussions about what it takes to help all Lakeshore students find and maintain a sense of belonging at our school. If your child is struggling to find their place, please have them reach out to a staff member, or do so on their behalf. We want to do our part to celebrate each child and make sure they are seen, heard and valued.

We hope everyone is having a great week so far, and we look forward to having our students back on Wednesday.

Kind Regards,

Ian Fero,

Principal
