Update to Parents - Week of October 30, 2023

Hello Lakeshore Families,

We are getting ready for Halloween at Lakeshore. It should be a fun week for students. Here are your updates for the week ahead:

Acting Chief Superintendent Visits Lakeshore

CBE Acting Chief Superintendent of Schools, Gary Strother, visited at Lakeshore on Friday. He took the time to meet with students and staff members. His feedback included his observations of high levels of student engagement and a feeling of positive culture. We were very happy to host Mr. Strother and are thankful for his kind words.

Halloween and Halloween Dance

Our Halloween Dance will take place on Tuesday, October 31 during the afternoon. Students will be able to wear costumes during the day provided they are consistent with student dress guidelines, G/PG rated and appropriate for all activities (ex. inflatable costumes are not great for PE). Costumes must be racially and culturally appropriate. There are no prop weapons or masks permitted. Students will be able to choose to attend the dance, or participate in quiet, supervised activities. There will be concession sales for students (items for $1 or $2) – cash only. If you have specific requests for your child, please connect with your homeroom teacher to discuss.

Wrestling Team Meeting Monday

The wrestling team will meet on Monday to discuss plans for the upcoming season. The meeting will take place throughout the lunch period in the Sport Performance room (upstairs). Male and female athletes of all abilities are welcome. Here are a few reasons why your child should consider joining the wrestling team:

1)    This is our only no-cut sport remaining, so everyone gets to participate

2)    There is no experience needed and everyone is starting at the same place

3)    Exercise and benefits of physical activity

4)    Our coaches make practices and meets fun

5)    Team members support each other in this cross-grade environment – if your child is looking to find “their thing”, they will build camaraderie with nother wrestlers

Demographic Forms Required to Be Returned

Families are required to update demographic forms on an annual basis. These can be completed online, but hard-copy forms have been sent home to families who are not yet compliant. These need to be returned directly. You are welcome to reach out to our office staff at Lakeshore@cbe.ab.ca for clarification or more information.

Perogy Fundraiser

Back by popular demand, our School Council / Fundraising Association has brought back the perogy / sausage fundraiser from Prairie Gourmet. The quality and value of the food was commented on by many who participated last year. Hard copy information was sent home on Friday with all the details. You are also welcome to connect with our fundraising chair, Erin, at lakeshoreparents.comms@gmail.com with any questions.

Fundraisers Not Your Thing?

Our School Council / Fundraising Association knows that there are a lot of people who want to help, but don’t love fundraisers. If this is you, there is an alternate option to make a straight-up cash donation. The Association recommends a guideline of $50 / student, but any amount helps. If you do not require a tax receipt, you can e-transfer to lakeshoreparents.comms@gmail.com. If a tax receipt is required, you can donate through the link HERE. We are currently raising money for additional Chromebooks with a target of $45,000.

Upcoming Fall Break

New to the CBE calendar this year is the Fall Break, which will take place from November 9 (CBE-wide Professional Day) to November 14. Students will return to class on Wednesday, November 15.

Remembrance Day Assembly – November 8

Lakeshore’s Remembrance Day Assembly will take place on Wednesday, November 8. We understand that the topics discussed during a Remembrance Day assembly may be difficult for some of our students and families. If you have concerns about how your child may respond emotionally during the Remembrance Day Assembly, please connect with your homeroom teacher.

Healthy Hunger

Upcoming hot lunch options for Nov. 6-8 include Spolumbos, Opa and Subway. Orders can be placed at www.healthyhunger.ca.

That’s all the news for this week. Have a wonderful, safe Halloween and we look forward to some fun on Tuesday as well.

Kind Regards,

Ian Fero, Principal
