Update to Parents - Week of September 18, 2023
Hello Lakeshore Families,
We are looking forward to seeing you this week at our Meet-the-Teacher Open House. Here are your updates for this week:
Meet-the-Teacher Open House – Thursday
Families are invited to attend our Open House on Thursday from 4:30 – 6:30 PM. You can visit with your child’s core subject teachers as well as our PE and Complementary Courses teams. Food Trucks will be on site as well, and we will have lots of parent information displays in The Den. Parents of students with Individual Program Plans have been invited to book 1-1 meetings on Friday morning.
Orange Shirt Day
Our Orange Shirt Day will be on September 28th. Students will be encouraged to wear orange on this day out of respect for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which is annually on September 30.
Terry Fox Run
We are making some big plans for our first annual Lakeshore Terry Fox Run, which will be held on October 6th. We will have donation target incentives, but if you would like to get things started, please donate online HERE.
School Apparel – Last Week!
This is our final week for school apparel orders. You can visit the online store HERE.
Celebration of Cultures
Our staff are planning to showcase our community’s cultural diversity. We are asking parents to help in identifying household cultures by completing the quick survey HERE.
Absence Notices
School are required to inform parents in regard to attendance concerns. Our process at Lakeshore is to send monthly attendance notices to parents when students have a 20% absence rate.
Volunteering at Lakeshore
We hope that you will consider volunteering at Lakeshore. In order to have you set up, two items are required: a valid PIC (Police Information Check) shared to the CBE, and an annual Volunteer Registration Form which needs to be submitted in-person at the school. If you would like some help in getting set up for volunteering, please contact Allison Hunter at alhunter@cbe.ab.ca.
Lunchroom News
· Middle School students aren’t always that great of packing lunches, and many students are forgetting food or not bringing enough. It’s always good to encourage your student to throw some extra snacks in their pack.
· Our Snack Shack is open at lunchtime for cash sales of snack items from $1 - $3.
· Healthy Hunger options for week of Sept. 25 include Swiss Chalet, Mucho Burrito, Papa John’s and Donair Grill.
· If you family is needing support with food access, we can help. Please contact our Lead Lunch Supervisor, Louise Piche, at ljpiche@cbe.ab.ca who will ensure your child will confidentially receive a lunch.
School Council Corner
· Our first School Council / Fundraising Association will take place this Wednesday, at 6:00 PM at the school. All Lakeshore parents are invited to attend.
· The Fundraising Association is looking for volunteers to assist in their Bingo fundraisers at the smoke-free venue. You do not require a CBE volunteer clearance to help, and any friends or family (18+) can join in. Please visit the sign-up HERE.
· Enter our Association’s Back to the Den 50/50 Draw. Draw date will be September 21.
Bears Athletics
Tryouts for our fall sports are now over with the exception of Jr. Boys basketball who will have their final tryout on Monday after school from 3:00- 4:30. Team athletes will be bringing home packages this week with information on all games and practices for the season as well as team fees.
We had hundreds of students try out for very few spots on teams. We are very proud of the bravery and ambition students demonstrated just by showing up for tryouts.
In terms of basketball, a prospects girls’ and boys’ teams will be starting the week of September 25. These teams are for students in grade 6-7 to give them a place to develop their skills and continue to play basketball. These are school teams which will cap at 18 players, with a tournament against other schools at the end of the season. More information to follow.
Home games are starting this week with our Girls soccer home opener on Wednesday September 20th at 4:30pm. Our soccer home field will be the field on the back side of the school, close to Prince of Peace. We encourage our Lakeshore families and students to attend our home games and cheer on our teams. All attending students are expected to demonstrate appropriate, respectful behaviour.
Lost-Not-Found
Missing a hoodie? There is a strong possibility it is sitting in our Lost-Not-Found. Our staff fold and display all items each day in The Den. Send your child down for a look or check at our Open House.
That’s all for this week. Thank you for sending outstanding students to our school every day. See you on Thursday!
Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
