Update to Parents - Week of September 25, 2023
Hello Lakeshore Families,
Thank you for joining us for our Open House last Thursday evening. Our staff were happy to meet you and show off our amazing school. Here are your updates for the week:
Orange Shirt Day
All students are encouraged to wear an Orange Shirt on Thursday, September 28. Wearing an Orange Shirt acknowledges the history of residential schools and shows that Every Child Matters.
No Classes Friday
There are no classes for students on Friday, September 29.
Lock Up Bikes, Scooters and Skateboards
Students are reminded to lock up their wheels when coming to school. We have lots of bike racks at all entrances and scooter and skateboard lockup at the front of the school.
Apparel Store Closes Sunday
Sunday is the final day for apparel store orders. Visit the site HERE.
Upcoming Healthy Hunger
Partners for the week of October 2 include Opa, KFC, Booster Juice and Subway. Orders can be placed HERE.
Grade 8 Bamfield Meeting – Wednesday
Reminder that a mandatory meeting for parents of students attending our Grade 8 trip to Bamfield Marine Science Centre will take place on Wednesday, September 27th at 6:30 PM at the school.
Lost Not Found
Lost items are sorted, folded and displayed in The Den. At the end of each month, clothing is packed and donated. Some items were claimed during the Open House, but there are still many items there. If your child is missing something (notably hoodies), please encourage them to pick them up this week. Any missing Lakeshore Apparel is kept in the office.
Clubs at Lakeshore
Our clubs are in full swing at the school. Offerings include: Aquarium Club, Yearbook, Dungeons and Dragons, String Instruments, Challenge Band, Guitar, Choir, Yearbook Cover, GSA, Book Club, Student Council and Art Club. All of our offerings are displayed to students in our main hallway by the office and are frequently updated on our school Instagram accounts, HERE.
Athletics
Selections for all our soccer and basketball varsity teams is now complete and all seasons are underway with season finals for Cross-Country set for Monday. Schedules for game action are always posted to the @LakeshoreAthletics Instagram account.
Basketball Prospects
Prospects Basketball will be starting this week at Lakeshore. This team is for grade 6-7 students who want to improve their skill and have an opportunity to play. This is not a drop-in activity and students are asked to make a commitment to the team and come to both practices each week. The team does have a cap of 20 players due to space and supervision constraints. At the end of the season, Lakeshore hosts a tournament where the prospects will play against other schools. The season runs from Sept 25- Nov 17. The practice schedule will be consistent through the season: Girls: Tuesday 3 - 4:15pm, Thursday 7:30am; Boys: Wednesday 3 - 4:15pm, Friday 7:30am. Please email Mrs. Clark with any questions at agclark@cbe.ab.ca
Cross-Country
Our last cross-country meet is Monday, Sept. 25 at 5:00 at North Glenmore Park. This is the meet that counts for points towards winning a Middle School Athletics banner, so we would love to see all our athletes together that day and cheering each other on. Lakeshore is proud to have over 80 athletes on the cross-country team! Parents, please follow @lakeshoreathletics on Instagram for updates and photos. There is a lot of parking at North Glenmore, but it fills up quickly. There is also construction at the entrance to Lakeview, so taking Stoney Trail to 37th St. SW is recommended. The start line is near lot E, and the finish line is near the parking lot by the tennis courts. The first race is at 5:00, but if athletes arrive around 4:15 they will have time to walk the course. Please ensure your child is signing in and out with one of the coaches. If you have additional questions, please email kjbarva@cbe.ab.ca. GO BEARS!
Spectator Policy
We are happy to have our students attend the first game when we host basketball at our school, but students will need to be accompanied by a parent / guardian after the first game. Lakeshore shares a common Spectator Policy with all other schools in our division. As stated in the policy, Lakeshore students are not permitted to attend away games without a parent / guardian.
Coffee with the Admin Team
Our first “coffee with the admin team” will take place on Thursday, September 28th at 10:00 AM. These are informal conversations and are meant to provide parents with an opportunity to share positive feedback, ask questions, and recommend areas for improvement. Please RSVP to itfero@cbe.ab.ca if you would like to attend, and don’t forget to wear orange.

Indigenous Community Connections
Saturday, September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The establishment of this National Day is a fulfillment of Call to Action #80 – “the establishment of a statutory holiday to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools”. Lakeshore School has established our own commitment and our grade teams will be sharing personalized land acknowledgements this week in the days leading up to Orange Shirt Day on Thursday.
Thank you, and have a wonderful week.
Kind Regards,
Ian Fero,
Principal
