Update to Parents - Week of September 5, 2023

Hello Lakeshore Families,

Thank you to everyone for an outstanding start to the school year. From our staff vantage point, everything went very smoothly. We were very excited to see our students back, and there were smiles coming in the building on Thursday, and even bigger smiles on the way out of the building on Friday. Here are your updates for the week:

Weekly Updates Resume

The Weekly Update to Parents will come out on Sunday (or the day before the week in the event of a holiday) and will contain a quick summary of what’s coming up at Lakeshore for the week. Please check your inbox for the update, which will also be posted to our website.

Student Schedules and Friday Schedules

Student Schedules can be viewed on student’s MyCBE account. They may seem a bit confusing, but your student will be able to interpret these seamlessly in very quick order. If you child is having trouble understanding their schedule, please encourage them to see their teacher, or come to the office for help. Also, our Friday schedule rotates between A and B days and also between blocks 1, 3, 5 and 2, 4, 6. This might seem a bit confusing, but trust us in that it will all get figured out very quick. Our Friday schedule is available HERE.

Complementary Courses

We are not able to consider course changes for complementary courses. Some students will see courses they did not select on their timetable, but that is to be expected in the process. We hope each student got 4 of 4 preferred complementary courses, but the reality is that most will have 3 or even 2 of their choices. Students will need to give courses some time to evolve. Once relationships with teachers and peers are established, comfort levels will stabilize. Thank you for your understanding in this regard.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up

While the weather is nice, we encourage all students to walk or ride to school to avoid traffic congestion around the school during peak drop-off times of 8:15 – 8:30 AM and at 3:00 pick-up. Vehicles are not permitted use the school side of Auburn Bay Drive from our school entrance walkway all the way to the end of the playground sign as this is our bus zone. We also ask parents to avoid using Auburn Glen Heights and also avoid the staff parking lot.

Lakeshore Online Apparel Store Opens this Week

We are pleased to offer Lakeshore Apparel options to our students and families. We have several new designs available through our online store including tees, hoodies and hats. The store is not open right now, but is set to open mid-week through the link here: https://stores.inksoft.com/lakeshore_school. The store will be open until Sept. 22 with delivery on or before Oct. 14.

Healthy Hunger is OPEN

Students are invited to participate in our optional hot lunch program by ordering through www.healthyhunger.ca. Once your account it set up for Lakeshore, please order according to homeroom teacher. Restaurant choices are set through end-October. Lunches will be available for pick-up starting at 12:20 and will be held for 24 hours in the case of student absence (or if they forget to pick it up).

Snack Shack is OPEN

Students are also invited to visit our Snack Shack each lunch period for cash-only purchases. The Snack Shack aims to sell healthier options at reasonable prices as a way to supplement student lunches.

Brown Bagging It for Calgary’s Kids

Lakeshore is a BB4CK school, and we will have bagged lunches, fruits and veggies for students who need some support with access to food. If your child would like to access the program, please have them come to the Snack Shack at lunch. Families can also confidentially discuss ongoing program participation by emailing our Lead Lunch Supervisor, Louise Piché.

Annual Athletics Tryout Authorization Form

Before any student at Lakeshore can take part in our athletics program, they must have an tryout authorization form completed. We strongly suggest checking all boxes that students would be allowed to tryout for at any time this year. This decreases the need for more forms to be completed later in the year and gives the student the power of choice during the school year. Completing this form does not mean a student is committing to tryouts, but just stating they have parent permission to participate if they choose. Forms must be submitted on or before the start of each tryout season. Students that attend tryouts without forms will be turned away. Forms can be printed and submitted to the PE office or sent digitally to agclark@cbe.ab.ca.

Fall Athletics

The Cross-Country interest meeting will be happening on Tuesday at lunch for students in grades 6-9. This is one of only 2 teams at Lakeshore that is no-cut and open to all participants regardless of skill or experience. We encourage students to take this opportunity to improve their physical fitness, challenge themselves and represent their school. Please contact the coaches with any questions: Grade 8-9: Emily Schroderus (emschroderus@cbe.ab.ca), Grade 6-7: Kristi Barva (kjbarva@cbe.ab.ca)

Soccer tryouts will be help Tuesday/ Wednesday for boys soccer and Tuesday/ Thursday for girls soccer. Both teams will practice until 4:15pm on the school soccer fields. Shin pads and cleats are not required but please bring them if you have them. Athletes are expected to be changed and ready with a water bottle. Please contact the coaches with any questions: Boys: Erin Richards (edrichards@cbe.ab.ca), Girls: Shae Nimmo (sknimmo@cbe.ab.ca)

Basketball tryouts will start the week of Sept 11. Please keep posted for specific dates and times. Information will be shared with students in PE classes and shared on Instagram @lakeshoreathletics.

Physical Education Class

Students will be starting their first Physical Education units on Tuesday. Please ensure your student has a proper pair of running shoes. If students insist on wearing footwear such as crocs or sandals to school they should have a change of shoes in their locker to change into for PE. Students must also show up to class with athletic-appropriate clothing. Students have PE each day from Monday-Thursday and alternating Fridays.

Our Sport Court is OPEN!

The Lakeshore Sport Court is now open for multi-use athletics. It features basketball, pickleball and volleyball. It’s also been used for street hockey, roller hockey and lacrosse. Thank you to our School Council / Fundraising Association for their hard work in getting this installed quickly for student use. While this is a Lakeshore court, it is for the entire community to utilize.

Stay Up-to-Date with Instagram

Lakeshore is a vibrant school community and we want to get parents and students the information they need in a timely manner. We recommend families follow along with our school Instagram accounts, which can all be found HERE. We also have a new main school account - @lakeshorecbe. You do not need to sign up for Instagram to check in on what’s happening.

Thanks, and please anticipate some lengthier updates as the school year gets underway. Thank you for taking the time to stay informed and thank you for supporting us.

Kind Regards,

Ian Fero,

Principal
